Whale Watching and Puffin Tour
In 2019, a project was launched with the aim of restoring the nesting of puffins to the island of Hrísey. Puffin chicks from Grímsey were brought to the island, where they were raised before being released into the wild.
To support the return of the birds, over 200 decoys in the form of plastic puffins were set up every spring, which remained until autumn. Such methods are known in ornithology to attract seabirds back to their former nesting grounds.
Just five years later, the project has yielded good results; Puffins have returned in their hundreds and have begun nesting in Hrísey, this is in line with the behavior of the species, as puffins show strong determination and often return to the same nesting sites year after year.
The puffin is a beautiful bird, its main characteristics are its colorful beak, which is striped with yellow, red and blue, it is black on the back but has a white chest and is gray around the eyes.
The puffins main food is fish, including sand – eel and capelin.
The puffin digs a hole that can be about half a meater long where they then lay one egg. Hatching takes about 40 days. The young remain in the hole for about 45 days after hatching and then head out to sea. There, they spend the next 3 to 5 years fishing and choosing a mate. Puffins are believed to mate for life.
And lets not forget our amazing whales, on this 2-hour trip we also see our lovely whales, where they swim, play and feed in their natural habitat in the Eyjafjordur, we can encounter, among other things, Humpback Whales, Porpoises and Minki Whales
This 2 hour tour combines this interesting natural history with whale watching, and provides insight into both the marine life and birdlife of the area.
