This summer has been great for the whale watching companies in Eyjafjörður. There have been many Humpback whales inside the fjord so our passengers have been really lucky with only 15-20 minute sail until we find a Humpback. Our goal is always to find a whale and arrive after the tour with a boat full of happiness and joy and in both June and July we have managed to complete that goal in every tour. Our 100% whale sighting success in both June and so far in July is something we are proud of and we are also grateful for having the amazing Humpback Whales around us. It has been difficult to catch fish this summer and we think it’s due to the amount of plankton in the ocean, when the fish has a lot to eat it won’t bite the hooks on fishing rod. The great thing is that the plankton and krill attracts baleen whales like the Humpback whale and even bigger ones.
We have seen a few new whales the last two weeks, we identify each individual Humpback whale by its tail and some of them even have names that describe their tail.
Examples:
Snow White: Has a completely white tail and is of course really beautiful so we decided to name it Snow White like the Disney princess. (I wonder if it has seven dwarfs??)
Icelandic name: Mjallhvít
Tuft: Tuft also has a white tail but the difference between Tuft and Snow White is that Tuft has a bunch of seaweed (Tufts) stuck to the spikes of its tail.
Icelandic name: Brúskur
Black: We did not manage to find a good name for this one in English but it’s really describing, we have only seen that whale once and he had a completely black tail which is really rare for Humpback whales in our area.
Icelandic name: Blakkur
Make sure you reserve a seat to see Snow White, Tuft, Black or any of their friends by booking now!
